Why Do I Need an Ultrasound Scan?
Ultrasound scans are one of the safest and most versatile diagnostic tools, used to investigate a wide range of health concerns, including pregnancy and baby development, women’s reproductive health, men’s testicular or prostate issues, soft tissue swellings, sports injuries, blood circulation, and abdominal organ conditions such as the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, or pancreas.
Whether you’re experiencing pain, uncertainty, or simply seeking reassurance, an ultrasound provides fast, accurate, and affordable results that give you the clarity and peace of mind you need.
How Does Ultrasound Scanning Work?
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of your body. A small handheld device, called a transducer, is moved over your skin with a special gel.
The sound waves bounce off organs, tissues, and fluids, and are turned into detailed images on a screen. Unlike X-rays, ultrasound scans involve no radiation and are considered very safe for adults, children, and pregnancy.
What Is the Difference Between External and Internal Ultrasound?
External Ultrasound
The sonographer places a probe on the outside of your skin with gel to capture images.
Internal Ultrasound
A smaller probe may be used inside the body (for example, transvaginal or transrectal scans) to get clearer pictures of certain organs. Internal scans may feel slightly uncomfortable, but they are quick, safe, and usually well tolerated.
How Do I Prepare for My Ultrasound?
Preparation depends on the type of scan:
Pregnancy or Pelvic Scans – You may be asked to have a comfortably full bladder.
Abdominal Scans – Sometimes fasting for a few hours is required.
Other Scans (e.g. MSK) – No preparation is needed; just wear loose clothing. When you arrive, you may need to adjust or remove clothing so the area being scanned is accessible. Occasionally, you may be asked to wear a gown. Our team will always explain what to expect beforehand.
How Fast Will I Get My Results?
Pregnancy scans: Often, results are shared immediately during your appointment.
Diagnostic scans: Images are reviewed by a consultant radiologist and a detailed report is usually available within 24 – 48 hours.
Follow-up support: If anything unusual is found, our clinicians will explain the results and guide you on the next steps.
