What Types of Pregnancy Ultrasound Scans Are Available?

Pregnancy ultrasound scans are safe, non-invasive, and widely used to monitor your baby’s development throughout pregnancy. They can provide information about your baby’s size, position, growth, wellbeing, and, in some cases, gender.

Dating Scan

A dating scan is typically performed early in pregnancy to confirm how far along you are. During this scan, the sonographer measures your baby, checks the heartbeat and early development, confirms the number of babies, and provides an estimated due date. The appointment usually lasts around 15 minutes.

Early Pregnancy Scan

An early pregnancy scan can be carried out from around six weeks. This scan helps confirm pregnancy, assess whether it is progressing normally, and estimate a due date. It may also be used to investigate causes of pain or bleeding and to check for conditions such as ectopic pregnancy or early structural concerns.

Anomaly Scan

An anomaly scan is a more detailed assessment, usually lasting around 30 minutes. It carefully examines your baby’s anatomy, including the brain, spine, heart, bones, face, kidneys, and abdomen. The scan also checks the placenta, umbilical cord, and amniotic fluid to support early identification of certain conditions.

Starting from £80

Growth & Wellbeing Scan

A growth and wellbeing scan is typically offered later in pregnancy to check your baby’s development during the second half of pregnancy. It provides estimates of growth and weight, details about foetal position and placental location, and, in some cases, confirmation of your baby’s gender. This scan usually lasts around 15 minutes.

What Is an Ultrasound Scan and How Does It Work?

Ultrasound is a widely used and safe imaging technique that creates real-time images of your baby without using radiation. A handheld device called a transducer emits high-frequency sound waves, which bounce off tissues, fluid, and bone within the body. These echoes are processed to create live images on a screen during your scan.

How Early Can Pregnancy Be Detected With Ultrasound?

Private early pregnancy scans are available from around six weeks. At this stage, a sonographer can usually confirm pregnancy, assess viability, and identify a heartbeat. An early scan may also help rule out ectopic pregnancy or highlight potential concerns that may require further monitoring.

How Long Do Pregnancy Ultrasound Scans Take?

The length of your appointment depends on the type of scan you choose, with most pregnancy scans lasting between 15 and 40 minutes. You may be asked to arrive slightly before your appointment time to allow for check-in. After your scan, your images and information are prepared for you before you leave.

Additional Diagnostic Scanning Services

Alongside pregnancy ultrasound scans, we also offer a wide range of private diagnostic ultrasound services to support your health at every stage. These include women’s health scans, musculoskeletal imaging, Doppler circulation scans, abdominal and organ assessments, men’s health scans, and investigations for lumps and bumps. All scans are delivered by experienced clinicians using modern imaging technology, with fast access and clear results.
