What Types of Women’s Ultrasound Scans Are Available?
If you are female or assigned female at birth (AFAB), we offer a comprehensive range of ultrasound scans designed to support women’s health at different stages of life. These scans are commonly used to investigate symptoms, monitor existing conditions, or provide reassurance.
Gynaecological Ultrasound Scans
Ultrasound is particularly effective for assessing the reproductive organs and pelvic structures, including the uterus, endometrium (uterine lining), ovaries, cervix, and fallopian tubes. A gynaecological ultrasound may be recommended if you are experiencing symptoms such as pelvic pain, irregular or heavy bleeding, post-menopausal bleeding, fertility concerns, or issues related to contraception.
These scans can help identify a variety of gynaecological and menstrual conditions, including endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), uterine fibroids, polyps, ovarian cysts, adenomyosis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and the positioning of contraceptive devices such as intrauterine devices (IUDs).
Depending on your symptoms and personal circumstances, the scan may be performed internally, externally, or using a combination of both methods to obtain the clearest images possible.
Transvaginal Ultrasound Scans
A transvaginal ultrasound involves the use of a slim probe inserted gently into the vagina to capture high-resolution images of the pelvic organs. This approach allows for detailed visualisation of the uterus and ovaries and is often recommended when precise imaging is required.
The procedure is usually quick and well tolerated, with minimal discomfort for most people.
Gynaecological Pelvic Ultrasound Scans (External)
A gynaecological pelvic ultrasound is performed externally by moving the ultrasound probe over the lower abdomen using a water-based gel. This option may be recommended for individuals who are not sexually active, do not wish to undergo an internal scan, or are under the age of 16. While external scans can provide valuable information, certain conditions may still require an internal scan to achieve more detailed imaging.
Breast Ultrasound Scans
Breast ultrasound is commonly used to investigate changes in breast tissue, including lumps, pain, tenderness, or discharge. It can help assess the nature of breast abnormalities and provide detailed images of surrounding structures.
Breast ultrasound may be used to examine breast lumps, cysts, tumours, calcifications, lymph nodes in the armpit area, damaged breast implants, milk ducts, or areas of fatty tissue damage. It is often recommended for younger women or those with denser breast tissue, where ultrasound may be more suitable than a mammogram.
Pregnancy Ultrasound Scans
We offer a range of pregnancy ultrasound scans to support you throughout each stage of pregnancy:
Early pregnancy scans are used to confirm pregnancy, assess viability from around six weeks, and identify potential concerns such as ectopic pregnancy.
Dating scans help determine how far along the pregnancy is and assess early fetal development. In some cases, fetal sex may be identified.
Anomaly scans provide a detailed assessment of fetal development, screening for a range of structural and health conditions using non-invasive methods.
Growth and wellbeing scans are typically offered later in pregnancy to monitor your baby’s growth, movement, and overall wellbeing, providing reassurance and additional bonding time.
Do I Need an Ultrasound or Another Type of Scan?
Choosing the right type of imaging can feel overwhelming, especially if you are experiencing symptoms or are unfamiliar with private healthcare services. Ultrasound is often the first choice for many women’s health concerns, but in some cases, alternative imaging such as MRI, CT, X-ray, or mammography may be more appropriate.
Our experienced clinicians are available to discuss your symptoms and help determine which scan is most suitable. You can book a telephone consultation before committing to a scan, and if imaging is recommended, the cost of your consultation can be deducted from your scan fee. This ensures you receive clear guidance and confidence in your decision.
